Steve left his home in Hamilton on September 6, 2009. He left a note for his parents that he was leaving for the weekend. He left at approximately 8:00 a.m. and did not speak with his parents on the day that he left.

Two days later a passing airplane noticed a fire in a remote area on Emmett Lake Road in St. Edmund’s Township and notified the fire department. Despite being completely destroyed by fire, police were able to establish that the car belonged to Steve Gagich.

On September 9th, Steve was seen at the Tobermory Ferry Terminal at approximately 7:00 a.m.  However, police were unable to confirm whether Steve purchased a ticket for the ferry.

Tobermory is a popular destination for tourists.  The Chi-Cheemaun is a large transportation ferry that carries vehicles and passengers from Tobermory to South Baymouth, Manitoulin Island.
