Carol had voluntarily admitted herself to the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital.  Her husband observed Carol walking southbound on North Algoma Street.  He tried to coax her into the car but was unsuccessful.

Carol later went to a Salvation Army facility on Cumberland Street North.  As a voluntary patient, she could not be forced to return to the hospital.

There were several unconfirmed sightings of Carol between Thunder Bay and Dryden during the year following her disappearance.
