In the months prior to his disappearance, Bruce was increasingly depressed because of unemployment. He indicated that he was going away for a while and asked his mother for $1,000. He was offered a truck but refused.

Bruce is a skilled carpenter who enjoys fishing and boating. He had also worked as a bartender in the past.

Bruce had lived in Manitoba in the past. His family attempted to locate him by contacting fishing lodges in the northern part of the province. Tips reported Bruce may have been spotted in Winnipeg but his family was not able to locate him there.
